In mid-November, we held a Mindful Eating Workshop (our third annual) and it was a huge success! We had a full house and full tummies after a meal of baked yams stuffed with quinoa & lentils, rosemary roasted almonds, salad, apples, and chocolate.
Mindful eating is all about slooooowing down and savoring our food. This time of year it’s especially easy to slip into mindlessly stuffing our faces with sweets and other treats.
When we eat mindfully, we look deeply at our food, recognizing what it is and where it came from. And when we see the nature of our food, we naturally begin to make more healthful choices. We can still have treats too. We just eat them mindfully and fully appreciate them.
MINDFUL EATING CHALLENGE:
Today choose a food, and savor it slowly. Take tiny elf-like bites. Recognize what went into the food you’re eating... the sunshine, the rain, the hard work of the farmer who planted the wheat, the coworker who baked the cookies, or the truck driver who delivered the sugar to the store. Savor all of that with gratitude.
There’s a quote from Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh that I keep in my dining room to remind me to savor and appreciate my food:
“May the food we are eating make us aware of the interconnections between the universe and us, the earth and us, and all other living species and us. Because each bite contains in itself the life of the sun and the earth, may we see the meaning and value of life from these precious morsels of food.”
